What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual Reality is a computer simulated 3 dimensional environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly realistic way via special equipment. The equipment involved includes a virtual reality headset, a motion sensor box, and controllers for the hand movement. Common uses for virtual reality include video games, military training, and education.
Augmented vs Virtual Reality
Augmented reality adds effects to a live view. This includes filters on snapchat and games that utilize the camera like pokemon go. Virtual Reality is an immersive experience that shuts out the physical world. A VR experience can range from exploring the Savannah to fighting zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality can combine into Mixed Reality which utilizes the extent of both 'realities'.
VR Limitations
VR in video games are really cool to experience, however there are major limitations to it. The cost of VR devices is high, ranging from 300-1000 dollars and it may only get higher in the forseeable future. On top of its large price tag it requires a good computer to run. Locomotion sickness and nausea is very common with VR and the weight of the device can cause headaches and neck pain. It also contributes to worsening eyesight since it's a screen placed a couple inches away from your eyes.
